Description
The Kentucky Department of Corrections (DOC), Division of Adult Institutions operates 12 correctional facilities that house Kentucky's adult inmate population.
The mission of DOC is to protect the citizens of the Commonwealth and to provide a safe, secure, and humane environment for staff and offenders in carrying out the mandates of the legislative and judicial processes; and, to provide opportunities for offenders to acquire skills which facilitate non-criminal behavior.
The Corrections Vocational Instructor at Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex (EKCC) is a vital job that contributes to a safer, more secure society for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, specifically regarding recidivism and post-release employability rates.
This particular Corrections Vocational Instructor provides targeted instruction related to HVAC to adult inmates within the correctional facility.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assesses students in a variety of methodologies, prepares lesson plans, and maintains records and reports on student's attainment and progress.
Provides targeted instruction in Vocational - Technical Fundamentals and Trade Craft content to inmate students within the correctional setting resulting in skills necessary to secure, retain, and become successful in business and industry upon their release.
Targeted instruction includes classroom and hands-on performance projects and jobs within the correctional facility.
Student advising and support in regards to their individual vocational and academic goals leading to essential job skills and academic and personal success.
Classroom Management including discipline and safety and security of students and staff.
Maintains and produces accurate student and school records and reports reflecting student assessment and attainments/progress and program effectiveness.
Develops curriculum and administers student assessment and reports.
Provides advising services to students and makes appropriate referrals where applicable.
The ideal candidate must practice self-management in attendance, punctuality, dependability, responsibility, and career development.
Situational awareness in safety and security is an essential priority in this position.
This position requires a high degree of adaptability and initiative.
Must be responsive to a rapidly changing work environment requiring complex decision-making skills in a dynamic work environment.
Superior communication skills with colleagues and the population served.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Three (3) years of trade-related experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional education will substitute for up to two (2) years of the trade-related experience.

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in a classroom/shop setting within a correctional institution.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.
